Arnolfini appoints new Curator
Arnolfini announced today the appointment of a new Curator of Exhibitions. Nav Haq will join the programming team at the end of August.
Haq is currently curating the 3rd Contour Biennial for Video Art, Belgium, opening in August 2007, and is also a Guest Editor at Book Works, London. He was Curator at Gasworks, London, until April 2007 and is also a co-curator of the ongoing exhibition/research project Lapdogs of the Bourgeoisie investigating class hegemony in contemporary art (Gasworks, London; Platform Garanti, Istanbul; Townhouse Gallery, Cairo; Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm).
Haq completed an MA in Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art in 2003 and began his career as a curator in Bristol when he undertook a residency at Spike Island in 2004, which culminated in the exhibition Spin Cycle. He went on to develop his curatorial practice through a series of project placements and residencies at Whitechapel Gallery and Kunstverein Munich. He also contributes regularly to a number of international art journals including Yishu and Bidoun.
Tom Trevor, Director of Arnolfini, said:
“We are very much looking forward to working with Nav. Arnolfini is currently developing a more project-minded approach, with greater emphasis upon international and local contexts. Nav has proposed an ambitious programme of projects that that are not only located in the exhibition spaces, but also in different sites and social contexts in Bristol, inviting artists to develop exhibitions that are critically engaged with both the institution and with different audiences. In this way, we will aim to create stronger connections between Arnolfini and the surrounding city, whilst also reflecting upon what it means to be an internationally focused centre for contemporary arts today.”
Nav Haq replaces Martin Clark, who will take up the role of Artistic Director at Tate St Ives later this summer.
