Mark Titchner nominated for Turner Prize
Mark Titchner has made it to the shortlist of four artists for his first major UK solo exhibition which was at Arnolfini between February and April this year. Over 100,000 people from all over the country visited the exhibition IT IS YOU which featured a number of media including print, wall drawing, video, sculpture and installation. Exploring systems of belief, Mark Titchner’s works incorporate a vast array of references from pop lyrics to philosophy.
The Turner Prize was established in 1984 and is awarded to a British artist under fifty for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the twelve months preceding 9 May 2006. Intended to promote public discussion of new developments in contemporary British art it is widely recognised as one of the most important and prestigious awards for the arts. Mark Titchner is nominated along with three other British artists: Tomma Abts, Phil Collins and Rebecca Warren. This year’s winner will receive £25,000, with £5,000 each for the other shortlisted artists.
Arnolfini Director, Tom Trevor says:
“This is great news for Mark and we’d like to congratulate him. Artists are shortlisted for the Turner Prize on the basis of an exhibition held in the last year and Mark was commended for his exhibition at Arnolfini, so this is really good news for us too. Following on from the success of holding the Becks Futures exhibition here I think this really confirms that Bristol is one of the most exciting places for up-and-coming contemporary art.”
Bristol will get the chance to see Mark’s work as well as that of the other Turner candidates, Tomma Abts, Phil Collins and Rebecca Warren, as part of the British Art Show 6 which comes to Bristol this summer 16 July –17 September. Additionally, Mark Titchner has been working closely with Arnolfini and young people from Education Unlimited on a Bristol wide project exploring new platforms for people's ideas and opinions using a billboard, fanzines and flyers. These will appear throughout the summer at venues around the city.
To coincide with the exhibition, Arnolfini has commissioned a limited edition print by Mark Titchner “It is You I Love The Most” (2006) which is available from Arnolfini bookshop for £150. The catalogue of his exhibition is also still available priced £14.95.
