Arthur Gravy’s ‘Time Well Spent’ Chapbooks
This series of ‘grotty little chapbooks’ is a fascinating collection of bird-lore and stories as viewed through a slightly warped and dusty lens. Attempting to wrestle outlandish ideas and working methods into a communicative and reproducible form, this collection employs bathos and humour to draw the viewer into the narrative and celebrates the shabby DIY aesthetic and modest pricing of the chapbook tradition. Ideal as a companion for idle moments or an unusual gift.
Seekers of Lice:499 Quandaries #2 to #3599
Between June and August Arnolfini bookshop will be participating in the Seekers of Lice Quandaries Initiative. Ten editions of 499 white paper bags will be appearing (and disappearing) in different locations throughout the country. One side of each bag is numbered from #2 to #3599 using prime numbers only. The reverse side has a handwritten ‘quandary’, each different. The quandaries conflate meaning, sound, association and visual pattern through alliteration, rhyme, half rhyme and non-logical pairings. Meaning is jostled aside by the strangeness of language. The bags will be given out with purchases from bookshop.

Sarah Scott’s work is strongly influenced by her work with textiles as well as her fascination with natural and abstract forms. These individual pieces are finely wrought with an emphasis on surface pattern and texture and are notable for their delicate character and unusual design.
