A Civic Inauguration of The Knitting Salon
Designed by artists Trevor Pitt and Kate Pemberton.
Sat 16 Jan, 10am – 4pm at The Mall, Bristol
Knitters and non-knitters were invited to a free event celebrating the ‘civic inauguration of an artist-led project called The Knitting Salon. The Knitting Salon actively promotes the sharing and learning of knitting skills through sociable events in public spaces. Experienced knitters and non-knitters were invited to roll on up, have a sit down, knit and share skills.
For its inauguration at The Mall in Bristol, eight Salon Benches and accompanying trolleys were on the ground floor, creating a stimulating learning environment that encouraged 1-2-1 sharing experiences. A lot of people turned up to take part, especially after hearing Trevor on Radio Bristol that morning. All were intrigued by the Salon Bench, made by ladies in Knowle West.
Each Salon Bench is a folding two seater wooden bench that have been covered with knitted sections made with a British yarn, and made by groups dotted around the UK. The groups were given a set of instructions to follow and each knitter given a Knitting Salon knit-kit that included instructions and wool.
Salon Bench Knowle West left its current place in Arnolfini’s gallery as part of Craftivism to take part in The Knitting Salon event. At 12 noon, there was a short speech and commemoration of The Knitting Salon by Tom Trevor, Director of Arnolfini who was wearing a mayoral chain especially crocheted for the event by Trevor and his mum..
