Featured Project
Martin Parr
Arnolfini is currently working with a number of external partners to deliver projects across the City. One such project features Martin Parr photographing an academic year in the life of St Mary Redcliffe and Temple school, documenting their transition to a new building and in so doing developing a unique relationship with the pupils, staff and their environment. This commission is part of Bristol City Councils public art programme.
The project will be complete in November 2011 and will showcase Parr's photographs as large scale prints in the school. Images from this extraordinary record will also be published in a newspaper which will be distributed across the city throughout November.
D3
Throughout 2011/12 Arnolfini is working in partnership with UWE and 10 final year undergraduate students on the BA (Hons) Design: Research, Materials, Context course. Through collaboration between the two organisations, students are working to a brief to develop site specific design solutions that attempt to answer the complex issues of creating practical, welcoming visitor facilities possible in our public spaces. The results of this interesting partnership project will be showcased in Arnolfini and at UWE degree show in spring/summer 2012.
Museo Aero Solar
Museo Aero Solar was an arts project which took place in Hengrove Park in collaboration with local community groups, schools, artists and residents. This gigantic solar powered balloon, made entirely from recycled plastic bags, formed part of Arnolfini's 50th celebrations and Museum Show Part 1.
The flying museum is built with recycled plastic bags, and flies using only solar energy. Any plastic bag can be used. A short film of the event can be found here.
University of Local Knowledge
The University of Local Knowledge (ULK), is a community project, in Knowle West and artwork, conceptualized and directed by Suzanne Lacy, developed in partnership with Knowle West Media Centre and Arnolfini.
The ultimate aim of ULK is to redress the inequalities surrounding hierarchies of knowledge and power, universities and communities, by acknowledging the value of knowledge and placing it centre stage.
The project aims to challenge and disrupt existing hierarchies through uncovering and celebrating the skills, talents and wisdom that exist in the South Bristol communities of Knowle West. It questions understandings of what constitutes valuable 'knowledge' and spheres of ‘expertise'.
The goal is to collect a critical mass of ‘local knowledge' on film, which will be uploaded onto a purpose built website and re-presented to the local community and the wider world as a virtual University of Local Knowledge. Alongside this, a series of seminars and a Summer School will be presented in 2012.
