A German intellectual theatre and film director who fled Nazi Germany for Hollywood, Sirk became the unlikely master of melodrama in the 1950s, making films that subversively explore the emotional extremes of family life and of developing capitalism. Gender, class and race, alcoholism and impotence, were all grist to his lush technicoloured mill. His influence on later filmmakers including Fassbinder and Todd Haynes has been profound. This day school run by Jo Elliot will examine the films and explore the debates that surround them.
