This day conference is aimed at arts and cultural organisations facing up to the challenge of moving towards low impact and carbon neutral operations.
This practical day of presentations and discussion will explore organisational best practice in terms of practical measures relating to buildings or practice, as well as examining the hidden investment of arts institutions in climate change such as sponsorship, pension funds, or transportation of artists, artworks and arts professionals. The aim of the day is to consider and take practical steps towards a radical reduction in dependency on carbon and on fossil fuel based economics, and to promote integrated and systemic thinking on these issues.
The keynote speaker will be Ben Todd, Executive Director of Arcola Theatre, London, which aims to be the world’s first carbon-neutral theatre. This will be followed by case studies and discussion around issues facing arts organisations wanting to implement change. Arnolfini itself and its building will present a tangible focus for discussion of the issues through a case study on the Bush House initiative and neighbourhood cluster (a work in progress in all its complexity) including a guided tour of the building by PLATFORM.
A second case study will consider exhibiting artist/activist group PLATFORM, whose practice is usually not venue based, reflecting on policies and controversies such as their Slow Travel policy for their work at Arnolfini. And finally it will consider how at the national and strategic level the Arts Council can support arts organisations to address these issues and foster arts and ecology initiatives.
Speakers/participants include:
Ben Todd, Executive Director of Arcola Theatre, London; John Hartley, Arts and Ecology Officer, Arts Council England; James Marriott and Jane Trowell, members of PLATFORM; Tom Trevor, Director of Arnolfini; George Ferguson, Bristol-based architect; and John Pontin, ethical property developer and founder of The Converging World; with a performance by the Institute of the Art and Practice of Dissent at Home.
