"Georgian film is a strange phenomenon, special, philosophically light, sophisticated and at the same time childishly pure and innocent. There is everything that can make me cry and I ought to say that it (my crying) is not an easy thing". Federico FelliniSun 12 Oct, 3.30pm

Proud and lonely, Georgian artist Niko Pirosmani forsakes all security to paint, exchanging his work in city bars for food, drink and a bed. Beautifully shot in muted colours, it's not often that an artist gets the film he deserves.

Pastorale explores what is truly valuable in human relationships, when one cuts away the non-essentials. Iosseliani's films show a characteristically Georgian film style; focusing more on character and mood than narrative coherence. A highly cultured group of musicians from a string quartet spend the summer rehearsing in a small village in the Georgian countryside. The film won the International Critics’ Prize in Berlin in 1982.
