The archetypal Ukrainian story of a young peasant who marries the daughter of his father's killer, loses her, falls into a long spiral of sadness and then remarries, again with tragic results.
Introduced by Layla Alexander-Garrett, organiser of Sergei Paradjanov Festival London/Bristol 2010
Dir. Sergei Paradjanov USSR 1964 1h 13min Subtitled
Director's Focus: Sergei Paradjanov
Arnolfini hosts a season of films by legendary director Sergei Paradjanov, including his acclaimed features and a recent documentary. Some of the screenings will be introduced by friends, collaborators and experts.
Hailed as a genius by the likes of Fellini, Antonioni and Tarkovsky, Paradjanov's films are as allegorical and mysterious as Byzantine frescos, each a beautiful riot of small movements within his almost always static frames. His approach was a visual and thematic condemnation of socialist Realism and the soviet project in general, as a result he spent much of the 1970s in jail.
After Paradjanov: Artists' Film & Video from Georgia
A selelction of contemporary Georgian Video Artists' responses to Paradjanov can be viewed in Arnolfini's Reading Room 11 - 6pm until 11 April or from www.tank.tv until 16 April.
The Sergei Paradjanov Festival (22 Feb - 9 May) in London and Bristol is the first major celebration of the legendary artist and filmmaker aiming to present his life and works to UK audiences through a series of events.
Sergei Paradjanov through the lens of Yuri Mechitov runs at The Bristol Gallery from 1 April.
