Ascenders & Descenders is a digital reconstruction of the renowned solo dance performance Loops by Merce Cunningham from 1971. Commissioned by Boston Cyberarts, sosolimited worked with open source material created in 2001 by OpenEnded Group who motion-captured Cunningham performing his Loops solo with his hands. In this reinterpretation, Cunningham's fingers trace out the letters of articles or essays about his work. The piece uses custom 3D software to, in Merce's words, "make any point on the stage equally interesting" and expresses the inadequacy of words to capture dance.
