Putting Hope Into Housing?

Join Design West for their latest talk at Arnolfinii.

Hope for Housing. Creating communities. Places for People. Building the Future. Bold Visions. Good Growth. Fixing Britain’s Broken Housing System?

We stand on the precipice. With 1.3 million people on the housing waiting lists in the UK the government cannot afford not to act.

Elected just under a year ago on a promise to deliver much need homes and to sweep aside the blockers the government launched a New Homes Task Force in September 2024.

This is a once in a generation opportunity for the UK. Scale of Ambition is dizzying. Can we deliver?

The government wants to build 12 new towns inspired by a visit to Nansleddan (Nansledan, Newquay?). What will these new towns look like and who will they serve?

Where will these New Towns be located?

How do we ensure they are real places and not just massive sprawling characterless housing estates?

From 1946 – 1970 the British Government built 32 new towns, many of which are now thriving. Can Brabazon and Sherwood (Sherford, Devon?) learn from the successes and failures of the twentieth century New Towns such as Harlow and Milton Keynes?

Milton Keynes has been recognised as one of the UK’s top cities for high wages, innovation, and housing growth.

How will we deliver this ambitious target with the challenges of an aging construction sector hampered by Brexit and a lack of industrial strategy?

After a decade of decline in housebuilding, the impact is a disconnect between working hard and getting on.

Come and find out what government are saying.

Will this solve the housing crisis?
