A celebration of our long-term community partners Latinas in Bristol, showcasing the vibrant culture and heritage of Latin America through storytelling, textiles, and co-created artworks.
The title, Como la Cigarra (Like the Cicada), comes from a song written and composed by the Argentine María Elena Walsh. First released in 1973, the song emerged in a turbulent period marked by the tragedies of Argentina’s dictatorship. It became an emblematic anthem for democracy, resilience and freedom.
The song is also closely associated with Argentine singer Mercedes Sosa, who recorded it for the first time in 1978 and continued performing the song while in exile. She included the song in her return to Argentina in 1982, turning it into an anthem of exile, migration, and reconnecting with one’s homeland. Performed by several Latin artists, the song is a powerful symbol of social and political resistance throughout Latin America.
Like the cicada, whose birth and metamorphosis serves as a powerful metaphor for perseverance and the struggle to survive and thrive again, Como La Cigarra celebrates the resilience of Latin American communities in Bristol and beyond, drawing upon collective ideas of home, community and identity.

Latinas in Bristol was established in 2023. Their vision is to see Latin American women thriving within a vibrant and empowered community, where their culture is celebrated, and their voices are heard as equals in Bristol.
They support the women’s mental well-being and foster connections within the group while building relationships with the wider British community through a programme of community-led activities, workshops and events. They are committed to nurturing a deep and meaningful connection with their cultural roots, providing avenues for exploration, celebration, and preservation of heritage, ensuring a sense of belonging and pride in their identity.
