Arnolfini opened on 3 March 1961, above a bookshop on the Clifton Triangle.

Founders, Jeremy Rees (a graphic designer), Annabel Lawson (a textile artist) and John Orsborn (a painter), none of them older than 25, had each contributed £100 to secure the lease for the space, with the aim to run an arts space committed to showcasing new, experimental and underrepresented artwork.

We’ve endeavoured to be true to that ethos, ever mindful too of Jeremy’s principle to ‘Enjoy Yourself’ and so thankful for the vision that has enabled us to all be here.
