In Between Time is a Bristol-based arts charity and Arts Council England  National Portfolio Organisation who collaborates with artists and audiences through an ambitious programme to amplify urgent voices and share the most incredible stories of our time. Our work explores, reflects and empowers the drive for global change. Since 2001 In Between Time has built international interest in live art becoming one of the UK’s leading programmes in which to experience live and interdisciplinary art. In Between Time produces extraordinary artistic experiences throughout the year through an annual programme that culminates in the biennial In Between Time Festival.

Founded by Artistic Director / Co-CEO Helen Cole, In Between Time emerged from Arnolfini’s Live Programme and became an independent organisation in 2009. Since then, they have collaborated across Bristol, the UK and internationally working with local artists and with artists from across the world in the creation of extraordinary artistic experiences in theatres, galleries, forests, caves, graveyards, warehouses, docksides, on billboards, in peoples’ front rooms and even the UK’s grand stately homes.

In Between Time have become globally recognised for their pioneering work, commissioning and premiering the most innovative international artists in the UK. From Trajal Harral (US) in IBT15 2015, to 600 HIGHWAYMEN (US) in IBT17 and Dorothee Munyaneza (Rwanda/Fr) in IBT19, they have also produced a programme of ambitious, culturally significant artworks, in Bristol’s public domain, including Fujiko Nakaya’s Fog Bridge for 2015’s EU Green Capital and 2019’s We Are Warriors in Redcliffe Caves for the Centenary of Women’s Suffrage.

IBT are a small, ambitious organisation who work closely with a range of arts and non-arts partners in Bristol and who sit within a wide UK and international network of live art presenters, co-producers, venues and festivals. In Between Time works to create career defining moments working with artists who often go on to develop wide international distribution of their work through our networks.

Collaboration sits at the heart of In Between Time’s work, connecting artists with people, stepping aside to offer co-creation and shared ownership of creativity. Through the Paul Hamlyn Foundation funded programme, We Are Bristol, a collaboration with Eastside Community Trust and Ambition Lawrence Weston, residents have worked with In Between Time’s programme to print, perform, sing, dance, create films, build gardens and make guerrilla interventions into Bristol’s streets.

In Between Time are committed to supporting artists and nurturing live art practice both locally and globally. They are a founding member of Live Art UK and the annual Producer Farm and n 2019 they hosted their first  Creative Exchange Lab, where 13 exceptional UK artists explored their practice and created artworks and provocations through workshops led by international artists Kameelah Rasheed, Dorothee Munyaneza and Cigdem Aydemir. In 2021, their 20th year, In Between Time will hold their 9th International Festival, IBT21 THE RUPTURE, an Arts Festival dedicated to the Future which celebrates the incredible resilience and creativity of artists.

In 2021 the collaboration with Arnolfini has been revitalised, a year in which IBT celebrate their 20th anniversary, and Arnolfini their 60th. The team at IBT are relocating back to their former home at Bush House to be part of the creative hub generated by the Arnolfini and UWE collective.
