This oft-filmed epic following a young nobleman’s downward spiral into alcoholism and vice after his family stop him from marrying the woman he loves, has been justifiably hailed as a classic of modern Bollywood cinema. Shahrukh Khan plays the title role with a brooding, Byronic intensity, but it’s the vibrant colours and opulent sets that are most likely to linger in the memory. A visual feast.
