Organised every five years, the British Art Show is a showcase of the most exciting, dynamic and contemporary visual art being produced in Britain today. The exhibition is presented in venues across Bristol: including Bristol’s City Museum & Art Gallery Room, Royal West of England Academy, Station, Spike Island at the A Bond Building and Arnolfini. Opened in Gateshead last year, the show has travelled to Manchester and Nottingham – Bristol is your last chance to see this important and provocative exhibition.

British Art Show 6 comes at a time when the art scene in the UK is larger, more vibrant and more internationally orientated than at any other point in its 26-year history. This is the second time the British Art Show has been presented in Bristol (the first being back in 1979) and features works by over 50 artists and artist groups. Arnolfini will be exhibiting works by 16 of the selected artists throughout the galleries including painting, sculpture, video, film, performance and public projects.

The exhibition highlights a number of current tendencies within contemporary art practice: from artists who freely mix art historical influences from nineteenth and twentieth century avant-gardes, to film

and video works exploring issues of geo-politics and migration. The works engage with ideas around architecture, the urban environment, landscape and ecology. Some have been made in collaboration with communities and organisations outside the gallery and many of the artists work across a range of disciplines.

A full guide to works in British Art Show 6 in Bristol will be available from each of the venues.

Organised by Hayward Gallery Touring. Curated by Alex Farquarson and Andrea Schlieker.

The British Art Show is a Hayward touring exhibition organised on behalf of Arts Council England and presented in association with Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and in venues across the cities of Manchester, Nottingham and Bristol.
