Image generates sound in video works by Christian Marclay interpreted by ensemble MAZE. A UK premiere.
Visual artist and turntable-pioneer Christian Marclay explores connections between found materials of sound, image and text. These materials often stem from everyday life or popular culture. Marclay is interested in the space where initial unity, meaning and purpose are lost, playing on the generative powers of difference and translation.
In The Bell and The Glass (2003), Marclay juxtaposes two of Philadelphia’s famous icons: the Liberty Bell and Marcel Duchamp’s The Large Glass. Marclay used original as well as found footage, including clips from Hollywood movies. In Screen Play (2005) black-and-white images are overlaid with brightly colored animated graphics which refer to musical notation and suggest tone, energy, rhythm, dynamics and tempo.
MAZE is a new electroacoustic ensemble, dedicated to performing music that challenges the idea of fixed form and a fixed listening perspective. The aim of the ensemble is to offer the listener different forms of navigating their own path in the music. This is found in not only the repertoire, but the musicians’ approach and their performance practice. Encompassing repertoire from the experimental tradition of John Cage, Alvin Lucier, Robert Ashley up to the contemporary work of artists such as Christian Marclay, Elliott Sharp, CM von Hausswolff and ensemble members Anne La Berge and Yannis Kyriakides, the aim of the ensemble is to build a body of work that reinterprets the relationships between performer and music, and audience and performer.
