Styled as a ‘docu-fantasia’, this haunting film – comic, singular, surreal – is Maddin’s evocative homage to a city he clearly loves. Part civic history, part fantasy, part personal psychodrama, the film’s central notion is that after all these years Maddin is desperately trying to escape Winnipeg’s wintry grasp. To do so, he takes a half-real half-imagined dream train through his own past.

Ripping up conventions, Maddin raids cinema’s often forgotten past to conjure up a deliriously eccentric offering. Shot entirely in a studio, it’s the moving and strange tale of a musical talent contest held in Winnipeg, the ‘world capital of sorrow’, in the Great Depression of 1933.
