Christien van den Anker, Associate Professor in Human Rights at the University of the West of England, will give a response to the exhibition Mierle Laderman Ukeles, Maintenance Art Works 1969–1980, in conversation with Arnolfini.
Christien van den Anker is an Associate Professor in Human Rights at the University of the West of England, Bristol. She researches human rights. Her publications include ‘Human rights and migration’, co-edited with Ilse van Liempt (Palgrave 2011) and a book series on Global Ethics. Christien uses her research as a platform for social change; for example, as part of her research into the rights of migrant workers, she co-founded the Migrant Rights Centre Bristol in 2010. Her mixed methodology of political theory, group work and auto-ethnography has led to various forms of collaboration with NGOs, policy makers, communities and the wider public; for example her latest research reflects on her learning from conversations at Kookoo cafe, where she cohosts an eatery in Persian cuisine with her partner.
