Artists have been exploring the potential of the moving image since the Surrealists provocative film experiments. This introductory course highlights the key ideas and approaches that have emerged over a century of film and video art. We’ll examine thematic and historical aspects, focusing on significant artists and films, from early pioneers to contemporary practitioners. Classes will include clips, screenings of rare films and visits to view contemporary work at Arnolfini and Picture This Atelier. There is an associated screening programme for this course, free for course participants and open to all.
