Lectures: Situations
Contemporary art and the question of context
This international lecture series explores the significance of context in the commissioning and production of temporary art works. It investigates the conditions under which many art works now come into being. This may be as part of a programme of ‘off-site’ projects which engage with ‘non-art’ spaces, for a biennial in which artists may seek to engage with the locational or social context, or as part of a residency. Lectures will explore context as an impetus, hindrance, inspiration and research subject for the process of making art. Situations is a two-year research initiative led by the University of the West of England in association with Arnolfini and Bristol City Council.
