Following the success of their last event, MANDEM are back to continue the discussion on masculinity.
Whilst high profile figures, from Prince William to Rio Ferdinand and Loyle Carner, have recently opened up to discuss their mental health, self-destructive masculinity remains a complex issue.
At this event we want to explore whether the progressive masculinity expressed by those in the limelight inherently bypasses large groups of men. How do the experiences of men in marginalised communities prohibit them from being open and vulnerable? What are the differences in the ‘male experience’ for men of colour compared to other communities?
Our panel for the evening will be:
Daniel Edmund
Daniel Edmund has previously spoken at TEDxBristol tackling head on the uncomfortable truth about the ‘straight jacket’ that modern men seem to get cast in, and the catastrophic affects it can have on men’s mental health and their relationships. He founded the company ‘Milk For Tea’ in 2015 as a way not just to engage with his interests but also to speak about important issues.
Olamiposi Ayorinde
Olamiposi Ayorinde is one of the original content creators for MANDEM and is currently attending the Screenology film school. In a recent project for MANDEM, he delivered a Shakespeare monologue that sought to help challenge and redefine the stereotypes surrounding black males.
Vicaas Hussein
Vicaas is Bristol born and bred. He comes from a working class Pakistani background through which he has witnessed and experienced varying forms of masculinity. His most recent work has included working with the Bristol Improv Theatre and the Babbasa Youth Empowerment project.
Jeremy Charles
Jeremy is a craft shoot/edit cameraman for BBC Points West and has worked in several departments including the Natural History Unit and Specialist Factual & Arts. He has also been involved in several youth community projects in Bristol and has experience in working with young people of colour.
