Introducing a new film project based on an archive of home movies documenting the dissolution of the British Empire.

Join film makers Noah Angell and Francis Gooding for an expanded Open Reading Group event introducing Lux Imperium, a new film project being developed from hundreds of home movies shot during the dissolution of the British Empire.

Lux Imperium explores the history of the home movie camera, which became available to the public in the same decades that saw the unravelling of the British Empire. While using this technology to record their private lives, amateur filmmakers throughout the British colonies were also unwittingly capturing the biggest empire in history in free fall.

Through introducing the film project as a ‘work in progress’ alongside a variety of other materials, the group will discuss the relationship between personal documentation and political event.

Reading/viewing materials are available here, please contact the Box Office or email Phil.Owen@arnolfini.org.uk for more details and to book your place.
