Accompanying artist Christine Sun Kim’s two-week residency, Arnolfini hosts an afternoon of conversation focused on sound, silence and the act of listening.

Join artist Christine Sun Kim, writer Daniela Cascella and musician and performance artist, Ansuman Biswas, to explore divergent artistic perspectives on listening and sonic practice.

The afternoon will begin with short presentations and conversations with each artist.

Christine Sun Kim is an artist who works with concepts around sound and visual language. Deaf from birth, Kim’s practice spans visual arts, performance lectures, music, film and large-scale performances involving members of the public. She is joined in conversation by Gill Nicol, director of Lights Going On. Gill Nicol has worked for numerous arts organisations including Ikon Gallery (Birmingham), Midlands Arts Centre (Birmingham) and Tate Liverpool.

Daniela Cascella is a London-based writer, researcher, and practitioner of sound writing. Her research is focused on sound and literature, driven by a long-standing interest in the relationship between listening, reading and writing. Daniela will be talking about her work and her latest book, F.M.R.L. Footnotes, Mirages, Refrains and Leftovers of Writing Sound. Daniela will be joined in conversation by Phil Owen, founder of Tertulia, to discuss issues around silence, listening and language.

Ansuman Biswas has an international practice encompassing music, film, live art, installation, writing and theatre. He is interested in hybridity and interdisciplinarity – often working between music, dance and visual art. He will make a short presentation about his recent work and explorations of sound and language.

After a short break, join us for an informal showcase of performative works inspired by sound, silence and the act of listening. Daniela Cascella will offer a reading from her newest book, F.M.R.L. Footnotes, Mirages, Refrains and Leftovers of Writing Sound. Luke Nickel and his spoken-word orchestra bring String Quartet #1, which focuses on sounds of spoken music and their subsequent silences indicating erasure. Ansuman Biswas offers an eclectic influence of improvised sounds using a breadth of performance traditions.
