Alongside Raise the Bar‘s stunning ‘Still I Rise’ December event at Arnolfini, we’re delighted to welcome international poet Mojdeh Stoakley to run a fantastic workshop ahead of the show.

WRITE ME DOWN IN HISTORY is an inclusive and interactive writing workshop, facilitated by award-winning writer, educator, Mojdeh Stoakley from Chicago (USA). All writing levels welcome. This workshop explores how poetry has acted as historic archive and vehicles or catalysts to social revolutions through the lens of poets who would be considered feminists and “cultural workers” today. Participants will learn to create texts that could have the power to ignite social change through
personal narrative.

As a cultural worker and social practice artist, Mojdeh bridges her craft as an artist with social work and public health intervention practices to engage in direct social action. Mojdeh’s work is born of her intersectional identities as an Afro Persian, practicing Baha’i, Afro-Futurist, public health researcher, youth worker, and survivor of violence.

Mojdeh creates socio-politically intentional art and curricula as well as trauma-informed events and workshops for artists, students, and audiences alike. They founded »radiant devices«, Interfaith Poets, and Lethal Poetry; is the Director of Poets with Class at the Chicago Poetry Center, Director of the 29th National Poetry Slam, and board member of Surviving The Mic. When they’re not being a creative savant, they’re engaged in HIV Prevention research and facilitating intervention workshops for University of Illinois School of Public Health.

Mojdeh’s also been featured by the BBC, Button Poetry, SlamFind, WBEZ, and Vocalo. Named 2019 Writer to Watch by Guild Literary Complex, 2019 Elastic Arts’ Dark Matter Resident, winner of a 2019 National Spoken Word Award, 2019 nominee for “Best Spoken Word Artist” at the Chicago Music Awards, 2019 Poet-In-Orbit for ONE CITY ONE POET.
