Join Conway and Young for a walk exploring spaces and traces of disobedience in Bristol.

As cities become more corporate in their design and organisation, where and how do people express themselves and affect the streets and landscape of a place?

Conway and Young are interested in the urban environment as an educational resource. This walk will pay attention to the alternative, non-commercial and locally sensitive – asking what exists in the margins and cracks of an environment neatly packaged and branded for commercial means. As well as looking for actions and interventions in Bristol, the route will highlight locations of counter culture and consider the politics of public space, the right the public has to the city and personal freedom.

Information covered in this walk will also be available from the Arnolfini as a limited edition printed map.

Please meet at Arnolfini Box Office at 2pm to join the walk.

Jen Conway and Jessy Young have collaborated as Conway and Young since 2006. They work in an inter-disciplinary way as graphic designers, art-directors, curators and lecturers on commissioned and self-initiated projects. Their practice has
a long-term interest in the relationship between people environment and learning. Their work employs graphic design in a number of ways, including; as a method for research and collaborative inquiry and more traditionally to give a physical form to communication. Taking both a discursive and material approach to the subject they are concerned with designs critical and social potential to generate debate, interaction
and exchange between people and communities. Projects often involve formal and informal collaborations with other people. Conway and Young are both senior lecturers on undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Design at the University of the West of England.

Walk & Talk Series

Walk & Talk is a series of lectures and workshops presented informally whilst walking around Bristol. These guided tours are specially developed and led by invited artists and academics with an interest in walking, who will consider the site specific features of the city as part of their discussion. The Walk & Talk series is part of the public programme of events presented alongside Richard Long’s major new solo exhibition at Arnolfini, TIME AND SPACE, 30 July to 15 November 2015.
