Introduction

Garry Fabian Miller was born in Bristol in 1957. His childhood was spent in a Somerset Village overlooking the Severn Estuary, a place which would later become the subject of his work. Sections of England: The Sea Horizon 1976/77 is a series of 40 photographs which Fabian Miller began when he was just nineteen years old. The photographs are taken from the same viewpoint from the roof of Fabian Miller’s home at the time. Each image in the series is constructed from the same position, with a set lens, film and exposure, recording the changing conditions of the sea and sky across the seasons.

In 1979 a number of works from Sections of England: The Sea Horizon 1976/77 were displayed at Arnolfini as part of Fabian Miller’s first solo exhibition, Colour Photographs. Eighteen years later, in 1997, this series was displayed again in his second solo exhibition at Arnolfini. This digital display shows the history of Fabian Miller’s long-established working relationship with Arnolfini. It brings together archive records from the planning and display of Arnolfini’s 1997 exhibition, along with press releases and reviews, and written correspondence exchanged between the artist and Arnolfini.

You can see some of the Sections of England series in Arnolfini’s exhibition ADORE: Garry Fabian Miller, from the 18th February to the 28th May 2023. The National Museum Cardiff will show The Sea Horizon series from the 18th February to the 10th September 2023. This exhibition features 40 photographs by Garry Fabian Miller, all made between 1976 and 1977, each capturing the view of the Severn Estuary looking toward Wales.
